We must not become sidetracked by greed or miserliness, for while the practice of generosity extends to both oneself and others, it is based solely on what resources we have available to us at a given time. If you encounter a legitimate need for help and you do not have the resources within your means to give that help, you should maintain the pure intention of giving assistance if you ever become able. If you hold this intention as well as offer the heartfelt aspiration prayers that you will one day have that ability to help, then in this instance you have furthered your practice of the perfection of generosity.

We must avoid the sidetrack that awaits us when we become enslaved by our focus on the accumulation and hoarding of material wealth, for then these resources are never used for the enjoyment or benefit of oneself or others.

So rather than placing our faith and confidence in the worldly dharmas and falling into sidetracks such as taking refuge in our accumulated material wealth, we must instead devote our faith and confidence to the genuine buddha dharma, for without that faith and confidence, although we may see some benefits from our practice, we will never receive the ultimate blessings and transmissions that come with the only true refuge, which is our refuge in the Three Jewels.
